Weed of National Significance (WoNS)

Wheel Cactus (Opuntia robusta) was added to the “Weed of National Significance” (WoNS) register in April 2012. Biosecurity SA, a division of the Department of Primary Industry and Regions South Australia (PIRSA), was integral in achieving this listing.
WoNS is a joint initiative of State, Territory and the Australian Government and is managed by a partnership of these governments.
Its aim is to prevent the establishment, spread and impact of all weeds that pose a major national threat on the environment, agriculture and economy.
Wheel Cactus poses such a threat in several states and also poses a huge risk to the safety of animals.
